Romeo and Juliet song choices
Romeo & Juliet
Act I – Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen
This song is about falling in love; Romeo and Juliet meet at the masque on that night and instantly fall in love. At first Romeo is moping because Rosaline doesn’t love him. In the song it says, “She gives me hot and cold fever, then she leaves me in a cool, cool sweat.” Romeo’s love for Rosaline makes him crazy and lovesick, but then he finds out that they can’t ever be together. The lyrics also say “I gotta be cool, relax, get hip, get on my track’s until I’m ready, crazy little thing called love.” This shows how Romeo goes to the party and tries to forget Rosaline, and meets Juliet.
Act II – Wonderwall by Oasis
Wonderwall means anything that makes you happy or brightens your day. This song is about the feelings people get when they experience the early stages of love and infatuation. It describes the changing between the happiness and hurt that someone can make you feel. This relates to Romeo and Juliet because they are young in love and cannot stop thinking about each other. They want to be together even though their families are enemies and it will never work. “Because maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me, and after all, you’re my wonderwall” Getting into a relationship will cure his loneliness and sadness and make him truly happy, which happens as he falls in love with Juliet
Act III – Going Under by Evanescence
This song is about someone who is trying to break free of someone or something that is controlling them, in this case, Romeo and Juliet being star crossed lovers blaming fate, and Juliet’s father forcing her to do things against her wishes. Everything falls apart from the very first scene in Act III. Mercutio is killed, Romeo is exiled, and things don’t look good for Juliet. “Going Under” by Evanescence is a dark song and shows a feeling of helplessness about being dragged into something by forces that you cannot fight (fate/star-crossed), and Juliet’s confusion at finding out that her new husband has killed a member of her family.
Act IV – I Will Wait by Mumford and Sons
The title of this song represents this scene really well; it is about god and coming back together after a dispute. This relates to this act because Romeo has been banished from Verona and even though at they will not see each other for a long time, they will wait for each other and be together. Juliet will not marry Paris even though Capulet has arranged for it to happen, but instead will wait for Romeo to come back.
Act V – The Third Temptation of Paris by Alesana
This song is two other lovers that caused a big death toll through their relationship. Both Romeo and Juliet’s actions were very quick and made without any thought of the long-term effects they would have, which caused several deaths, as well as their own suicides. “Desire leaves me numb to all the pain surrounding me” Romeo and Juliet commit suicide after finding the other dead. The pain brought on by killing themselves wasn’t only physically to themselves, but mentally for everyone else. “Sacred and profane is our love in death” relates to when Capulet and Montague give up the grudge between their families because of the all the deaths and the love their children had.
Sarah, this is a FANTASTIC collection of songs to suit the play. You have really given it some thought and provided a detailed description of each one. Really impressed with your explanantions of Acts 2, 3 and 5. Well done!! With these choices and analysis, you are showing a strong understanding of the events and emotions in the play. Also, your choices are awesome too. Love me some Queen 🙂
