ROMEO AND JULIET- Song For Each Act

September8

Act 1: ‘Love At First Sight’ by Kylie Minogue

This song is about seeing someone for the first time and falling in love, just like when Romeo saw Juliet at the masquerade and fell in love with her instantly. In the song it says, ‘Thought that I was going crazy, just having one those days yeah, didn’t know what to do, then there was you.’ This relates to this scene because Romeo was heartbroken about Rosaline not loving him. He was depressed, moping and having a bad day but when he saw Juliet and all his sorrow disappeared. In addition the song also said, ‘And everything went from wrong to right’, that’s exactly what happened to Romeo in this act, his situation to him was wrong but when he saw Juliet, she was his solution and made everything right.

Act 2: ‘They Don’t Know About Us’ by One Direction

This song is about keeping their relationship secret and how people’s opinion on their relationship is wrong. This relates to how Romeo and Juliet are married in secret and how it doesn’t matter that their families are enemies, they love each other anyway. In the song it says, ‘People say we shouldn’t be together’, this relates to Act 2 by how there is disapproval on their relationship if it becomes public. Also, the song says, ‘Cause this love is only getting stronger, so I don’t wanna wait any longer,’ this relates to how Romeo and Juliet fall in love quickly and marry, not wanting to wait.

Act 3: ‘How Do I Live?’ by Leann Rimes

This song is about the impossibility of living without the person you love. In Act 3, where Romeo kills Tybalt and is banished from Verona, in Friar Lawrence’s cell he talks about how if he doesn’t see Juliet it would be equivalent to being dead. The song says many things like:

–          ‘You’re my world, my heart, my soul’

–          ‘If I had to live without you, what kind of life would that be?’

–          ‘If you ever leave you would take away everything good in my life’

–          ‘How do I live, breathe, survive without you’

–          ‘There would be no sun in the sky’

–          ‘There would be no world left for me’

These lines are things that Romeo might say or be thinking about his fear of banishment because he will be separated from Juliet and the idea of that is like death.

Act 4: ‘I’d Die For You’ by Bon Jovi

This song is about how someone loves someone so much they will do anything for them, even die for them. This is the case for Juliet, in order to be with Romeo she will fake her death, in the process she will lose her family, friends and wealth all for Romeo. This song states, ‘I’d die for you, I’d cry for you, I’d do anything, I’d lie for you,’ Juliet practically did all those things for Romeo, her love for Romeo is so great that she’ll sacrifice everything.

Act 5: ‘Bad News’ by Kanye West

This song is about receiving bad news that ruins your dreams. This happens to Romeo when Balthasar gives him news about Juliet’s death. The song says, ‘I was waiting on you, waiting on a dream, that’ll never come true,’ this relates to how Romeo dream was to be with Juliet and both of them were well and happy but after receiving the bad news he realises that his dreams won’t ever come true.

Monika, your choices are PERFECT. You have provided a detailed and effective analysis of each song and made them fit in with the Acts. I like the different music gendres you have chosen as well. I believe this fits in nicely with the changing nature of the play (it’s not all happy, or all tragic, and your songs reflect that). It’s also great that you’ve included songs from varying generations. I’m super impressed with this. Well done!!
